The water is safe. I fish here frequently. I've seen one SMALL alligator in the last 3 years. I wouldn't recommend swimming in the St. Lucie River, because the current is quite strong, there are lots of sharp rock/shell beds and the visibility is limited. However, it is perfectly fine for all types of paddling and boating.

Lots of alligators-BIG ONES- which i love to watch-but not swim alongside. Swimming here would be extremely dangerous. I do see some kayakers, however. Just dont fall out!

Boating, jet ski, kayak, canoe, fishing. Never seen anybody swimming there.
