According to the history of the Nahunta community by Mozelle Hurley, The first inhabitants of they Nahunta Community were Tuscarora Indians. Indian relics have been found and continue to be found in almost every area of Nahunta. Remnants of an Indian campsite remain at the Nahunta swamp. The origin of the name Nahunta is not clear. Nahunta is the name of a vast swamp crossing the breath of Northern Wayne County. In F. Roy Johnson's book, The tuscaroras, says that Narhantes was actually nine forts across a mile accross the country the name was spelled in various way. Naughunty, Norhanty, NoriiHunta, Narhunts, and finally Nahunta.
Wikipedia says it's the name of an unincorporated community in Wayne county, NC. The origin of the name is unknown.
Nahunta is Iroquois for "tall trees". When the Tuscarora moved from this area they either went north to join the Iroquois Confederacy or went to Robeson County and dwelled amongst the Lumbee.
