My daughter of 18 years was approached last Sunday to join a small group and was told to apply online. When doing so online it asked for her social security number and I am not comfortable with her giving this out. Is this necessary?

I attend this church and as far as I know they've never asked anyone for their ssn unless it was to volunteer.

You should never give information online unless you know it is a valid source. I joined as a volunteer for the childrens ministry and was asked all this information to get a background check. Now if it is just join a small group there ia no need to enter this info. All she needs to do is go to the small group on the day and time it gets together.

I am a small group leader at cf Redland and you never have to fill anything out online to join a small group. That person must have thought that she wanted to volunteer and is having her fill out the volunteer forms online. As a volunteer it is always necessary to run a background check but if she is not volunteering then there is no need for her to fill out those forms, she just needs to show up to the small group at that day and time and that's it.
