I retired from 40 years of practicing primary care medicine 2 years ago, and I have some familiarity with the healthcare environment around Alturas. I did my residency at the UC Davis program in Redding, and after finishing in 1978, I gave serious consideration to several practice opportunities between, roughly, Burney and Cedarville. I love that country, and I had a cousin in Cedarville who was twistring my arm with considerable vigor. In the end I decided against it, for several reasons, which are mostly the same reasons your community has trouble attracting good doctors: (1) I was recently divorced, and the pool of single young women sharing my interests and outlook appeared to be small to nonexistant. (2) I wanted to have at least a few excellent doctors around me to stimulate my drive to keep current with new developments in medicine.
