Take the B/C trains to 81st Street (note: the B train runs on weekdays only) or the 1 train to 79th Street. There is an entrance to the Museum inside the 81st Street B/C station, while the 79th Street station is two blocks west of the Musuem. Note: the 81st Street and 79th street subway stations are not wheelchair accessible. The closest accessible subway station is the 72nd Street station for the 1, 2, and 3 trains, with a connection on the northbound M7 bus on Amsterdam Avenue.
