You can always walk in, just be prepared to wait if you don't make an appointment. Also, if you try to renew more than 90 days prior to your expiration date it may cause you problems. Go to the DMV website (www.dmv.ca.gov) to verify what, if any, documents you may need in order to expedite your application process and not have to make a return trip.
