I would get a 7.5/8.5 ham it will give you some leftovers

I concur. Half ham of 9lbs feeds my household of 5 with a lot of leftovers.

I agree. The slices will be enough for your meal, and the unsliced part of the ham can be used for a casserole later and the ham bone for soup.
