We joined a guide and several others. Seemed very safe. Many people around.
Hello Jeff, Thanks for reaching out to us. There are many cemeteries throughout the city, some require that you enter with a group (St. Louis Cemetery No. 1) so crowds can be better managed, others are just open to visitors from New Orleans or elsewhere. Like in any big city, you should be careful to stay in well-lit areas where there are plenty of people. We recommend Lafayette Cemetery No. 1, as the best cemetery to visit/roam; it is located in the heart of the Garden District, near Stop 12 on our Hop-On Hop-Off tour route.
A tour group is required at St. Louis #1 + about $18. Others are just as fascinating. Metarie Cemetery us newer, abt 1874, but has beautiful mausoleums. Be sure to seek out the Weeping Angel. Lafayette is on the Hop on Hop off tour. Very historic. The mausoleums for Nicholas Gage is in St. Louis #1.
