Yes that's the point of the preserve
spray down w sawyers permithimin people..it works..
No old growth. Lots of man made controlled fires meant to simulate lightning strikes and "natural fires.". My guess is that future scientists will be laughing in a hundred years about the aggressive "controlled" burn management going on constantly in the preserve today. The pitch pines do seem to thrive, however.
There are loads of ticks there becareful walking, they killed alot of trees which encouraged the overgrowth of thornbushes too.Mostly pine trees are there now and lots of sand. Watch out for mountain bikers on trails
There is quite a bit of old growth.but The burns are needed to control the wicked weeds. So they don't choke out the Lupine Plants needed for the Karner butterfly, to thrive
Yes and no. They've cut a lot of trees down to try and reintroduce original plant life. There is plenty of woods and trails. I wouldn't actually call it " old growth"
The reason for the controlled burns is that it keeps the oak trees in check so they dont choke out the pines, and likewise the flowers the Karner Blue Butterfly uses for food and shelter. It's an artificial balance that used to be a consistent natural occurrence.
Very little left but loaded with ticks l ok very well thru
Was most of it cut for the Albany woodlot, and that's why there's no old growth trees?
Barely any forest at all. They're forcing it to some historical condition i guess. Its a very nice walk though but be ready for the ticks.
