I have rescued a large 3 yr old 🐱 cat 6 months ago. I love him but he scratches me all the time. I need him declawed. He is a indoor cat but I have no money to have it done. Don't wanna get rid of him but my arms and legs are scarred terrible.

I had a 2 yr old cat that I had to get declawed even though it was my best interest. My husband and I got him at 8wks. and we tried toys, scratching post (all kinds), plying with him, clipping his nails but NOTHING worked. He was literally destroying our house. He was climbing the door frames which we still have huge claw marks in our walls from plus scars on ourselves. We had to decide to either declaw or get rid of him and after having him over a year we didn’t wanna to. The vet said when it comes to declaw or get rid of the declaw is lesser of the two evils. We paid around $500 for the lazer way because the heal time is better and we paid an extra $100 for extra pain meds. He is fine now and a whole new cat but makes sure you try everything first because even though we did it it still makes me feel horrible inside.

Declawing is inhumane

Surrender the cat to SPCA rather than getting it declawed. If you can't take it anymore, they may be able to pick up the cat. Contact them.

Nail clippers, scratching pads or posts, toys etc. all need to be tried before you decide. The first two people are correct about it being a major surgery. Imagine how much it hurts when you break a nail down past the nail to the skin. Well this surgery is literally like pulling all your fingernails off, then making you walk on the hands your nails were pulled off of! Cat could be trying to play or need other things to scratch. If the scratching pads don't work alone, try adding some catnip!

The SPCA absolutely will not perform or recommend declawing. Any vet will charge a lot more than $20. Do you trim your cat's nails? Do you provide scratching posts and other things for him to play with? All those things should be attempted before you decide to have a major and painful surgery like declawing. It's cruel to do that to a cat.

It would cost a lot more than $20 which the previous reply suggested, declawing is a major surgery requiring anesthesia and a long recovery time. It is very traumatic and painful for the cat, tantamount to a human losing their fingers. The MDSPCA strongly discourages this surgery and probably won't perform it for you. Have you tried nail caps? Softpaws brand is popular.
