I suggest booking online. We didnt book online and we were unable to go inside the mansion as they were sold out for the day which was disappointing. You can walk in and pay if you don't care much about seeing inside the mansion though. The grounds are very interesting and cost around $15 per person which also includes a complimentary wine tasting.
You can pay when you get there, but they stay fairly busy. The plantation is breathtaking. If you have a time frame in mind, I highly recommend reserving your spots in the tour ahead of time.

Yoy can walk in, but make sure you get there early enough. They sold out of tours while we were waiting for ours to start. I think we just made it.

If you book through Expedia/Viator it's a little less expensive. But, you can just walk and pay.

You can book ahead if there is a certain time you want to take the tour. There is a limit on how many people take each tour.
