The cards have to be activated at the register. Take the receipt to the store to prove they were activated and they should fix the error at customer service.

Your gift card should have come with a receipt telling how much the card is worth. Ask the person who gave you the card if they still have the receipt... All these cards are activated when the cashier runs them through their machine. Maybe the card was never paid for? Or maybe your friend has the receipt to prove it? Best of luck and Happy New Year !
