You can pay on-site, but ordering online helps guarantee better seating.

You can do either. If you pay at the front you can get a visual idea of what seat you'll be sitting in the theater in contrast to where the movie screen is. I'm not sure if you can do that online

You don't have to call ahead for seating but you get seat locations that are not reserved. So there may not be seating available together with your family.
