Antenna, antenna height, and terrain are the biggest challenges you have along with activity in that area. Amplifiers are not legal in the US, so you will find them at very few radio shops. Get a good 5/8 aluminum antenna, if your coax run is more than say, 30 feet, or if your coax is more than 6-8 years old then replace it with a good RG-8 type. No crimped connectors if at all possible. Use dielectric grease or fluid film on all connections and wrap them with a few layers of good quality (3M) electrical tape. Even better would be to use a self bonding silicone tape. Make sure your SWR is less than 2:1 and rock and roll. If you want to talk locally and you're in a valley or behind a hill in the direction you want to talk then none of this will help. Damn mother nature wins again lol
