There are campgrounds that they wpuld prefer you use, but i would suggest calling ahead about primitive canping like that.
No, but there is a hike and bike campground at Pantoll and a walk in campground at Bootjack, both of which have good access to the trails. The Pantoll hike and bike is $7 per person and no reservations are required at either campground.
No. There are only a few legal camping spots on Tam. The upper part of the mountain (past the gate by Pantoll) is closed, even to hiking, from sunset to 7am. This includes anyone staying at Pantoll and Bootjack. Getting caught in the park after sunset can get you a citation and fine. If you want to be more up on the mountain, I suggest looking up West Point Inn. It is camping in little cabins with cots. But you are not allowed to wander off property.
