If you want sheer magic, number of attractions and Walt's original dreams, Disneyland. California Adventure has a few more thrills, cutting edge rides, but less magic. My personal favourite is California Adventure, because World of Color is simply amazing.
My personal favorite Disney park is the Magic Kingdom in Orlando FL...however they all have their own unique attractions and shows.
Yes I suggest using the gift cards inside the park on food and gifts. It helps keeping track of money being spent.

It depends. If you have active kids who can't wait to long in lines California Adventure would be the best. Disneyland is the same old same old.
Depends on your age and your interests. Disneyland in Anaheim have best original characters, shows and atmosphere, the Adventure more rides. Orlando have most extreme rides.
