You don't necessarily, but if you want to avoid waiting for a number too early in the morning, get an appointment, way easier

I was there at 6am since they start giving numbers in order to help you some are at 9am...different time ticket #"s depending your place in line. It depends on ticket time they give you, you don't necessarily need to be be there you can come back at your ticket time.

You have to be there at 8am to get a number (same day appointment) they're only giving out 150 numbers a day
