I generally only leave a tip for table service. If i really like a place like this i might leave a dollar or two.
In my opinion, no business should ever ask for a tip. For me a tip is something you give as a courtesy because you like or appreciate the service beyond what is expected. I am self employed and when someone says "I don't have enough for a tip" I say, "if you come back, that's as good as a tip. Actually, the US of A is one of a few countries that requires/asks for tips. If you travel to other countries or have foreigners visiting, they're not used to "tipping". If you notice, on some receipt it say suggested/recommended tip/gratuity. If you pay by card (credit/debit) they might add it, if you pay cash, you have more control if you decide to tip or not. FYI. If you don't like my answer, don't ask. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!
