40 acre and the path to the observatory lake

Courtney Bell | Jun 15, 2019

40 acre lake and the path heading towards elm lake by the observatory Tips- go early morning as soon as they open. Once it gets too hot outside, they'll stay underwater to cool off. Cold blooded animals get overheated when temperatures reach around 100. I got there around 10am and saw 8 gators within my first 5 minutes. While walking, I saw a total of 17 gators, mostly in 40 acre and on the path. When I was walking back to leave, it was around noon and I did not see a single gator. I saw bubbles on the surface so I know they were submerged at that time of day. Also, if you are going for the gators, stay off the small trails that connect the lakes and take the paved paths ( shortest distance). I made the mistake of taking Live Oak Trail to Elm lake. It was 2.7 miles rather than .7 miles. By the time I got to Elm lake, the temperature was upper 90s and gators were starting to submerge underwater. I feel like I could have seen more gators if I didn't take the nature path
