I agree with James, it is worth the few minutes of driving time to not stay in Nashville proper.
There are a few new hotels in Goodlettsville. We have family that stay in Goodlettsville and enjoy it. It's very convenient to get to Madison or Nashville.
I would recommend staying in the Goodlettsville or Hendersonville area for a little better pricing. Those are both located in the Nashville suburban areas and are safe areas as well. Those areas are also only a 15 min drive to the downtown area. In Nashville hotels are kind of pricey.
I live near the church....but I wouldn't stay at a hotel in Madison or Goodlettesville
