If it is a major holiday book as early as you can, but you should be able to get tent and camper sites with a month or two in advance.
We booked about a month in advance and were fine.
For what venue? It should be about 6 months in advance if you want a good spot. Otherwise, i would say book it 1 year in advance for a great spot.
