Is it safe to use basic 10 foot kayaks right across from the park in Lake Superior or do you need special kayaks for a Lake that large with undertoes, etc.

Yes, shallow water!

We took ours down to a small bay W of the park. I definitely wasn't comfortable going out of the protected area at all. And a storm blew in pretty quickly so glad we weren't in open water. We were in 10' flat bottom, no rudder.

Check with the ranger station at the state park. They have updates everyday.

You can use them near shore, the park does Kayaking 101 programs with 10' recreational kayaks. I wouldn't recommend going farther out than 100 yards, the winds and conditions can change quickly.
