The Hampton/state sales tax is 10%. Not sure if there's another tax for alcohol.
You pay more on food if you include alcoholic drinks. Ask they be billed separate
I think the tax in Hampton is 14%. It is very high. There's the state sales tax, then there is a restaurant tax, then there's a luxury tax for being a resort area. OozleFinch follows the laws of Hampton and Virginia. I know when I go to any McDonald's on the peninsula and get a $1 coffee, I pay $1.14. It might be all of the Peninsula that follows the same tax rates. Anyway, each business does not set their own tax rates, they follow the county, city and state laws.
Yes. Normal food tax is low in VA but this would fall under prepared food tax which is really high comparatively.
You should have been charged 11.5% prepared food tax.
