How does Fred Meyer get away with not IDing young looking people at self checkout for alcohol? I paid and got a receipt and left with the beer without being IDed and I look pretty young.

Usually they are pretty good about checking ID. But maybe you're not as young as you think you look. Haha

As an employee... There is an attendant running self checkout. They carry a handheld device, it notifies them of age restricted items rung up. They can look at you and clear it remotely if they choose to. But are trained, to go up and acknowledge the customer face to to face, and clear it at the robot screen or enter the id

As far as o know they check anyone they believe tho be under age.
