Some suggest it's the petrified trunk of an a giant, ancient tree. Geologists would argue that it was formed by magma being forced to the surface, and what's left is the eroded remains.
Several theories but no one actually knows
Looks more like a petrified tree stump to me. God is awesome.
The simplest explanation is that Devils Tower is basically a volcanic plug, formed by magma which cooled underground and was later exposed by erosion. The magma cooled and crystallized into a rock type known as phonolite porphyry. As the rock cooled and contracted, it formed hexagonal (and sometimes 4-, 5- and 7-sided) columns separated by vertical cracks. These cracks grow very slowly due to water freezing and expanding between the cracks during the winter.
Ancient volcanic plain; the "tower" is supposed to be a column of igneous rock pushed up by volcanic activity.
