If your connection is an international flight that is if your port of entry into US is at Boston, JFK, LA,etc any airport you first land in US and take a connecting flight either within US or to an other international destination you are supposed to collect your checked luggage and TRANSFER at the luggage counter to the next flight you are boarding and you need to get through all the IMMIGRATION, CUSTOMS, SECURITY procedures before you board your connecting flight. So plan such that you have enough time to complete all these as it may take a minimum of two to four hours for this process depending on the airport, the time you arrive, flight delays if any, long ques at immigration, security, your next flight deadline for boarding and handing over your luggage. You can have assistance from the airport staff but these are something you should plan while booking your tickets.

You probably can, but is it worth the trouble? I had an overnight layover in Paris once, en route to the US from South Afica, and was able to pick the bag up in Paris, simply by requesting to do so when I first checked the bag. That said, in hindsight it wasn't really worth it, as I had to arrive earlier the next day to re-check the bag, which gave me less time to spend in the city, and I had to drag around a heavy suitcase. Now, whenever I have an overnight layover, I make sure to pack a day's worth of things in my carry-on, to avoid the hassle of re-checking other luggage.

Yes ask your airline representative where the luggage office is for your airline. Ask your request and the will gladly be to comply. I actually did it myself once. However it may take some time to get your luggage such as a 30 minute give or take for example. ( Provided its a domestic flight, not sure about international)

You could, but it probably isn’t worth it

You can but it would be easier to store. You also have to go back through screening and prob will be searched more thoroughly, not fun
