They do sell tickets. When you buty a ticket you get to pick where you want to sit. So you know you will have a good seat to see the movie.

They were doing it before the pandemic ... One reason could be no one can float to another movie after seeing one already ... Assign seating can make it difficult to float movie to movie
To give you a chance to seat were you want and it's better that staying with your self or your group
