We went as a couple and got start in on a busy Saturday morning.
Reservations are preferable probably, but if you go as a single or couple and lurk near the bar you can snag seats when someone gets up. I went by myself Saturday morning when they said there was a 2 hour wait, and waiting by the bar I got a seat in 20 min or so.
You can check in on their website. It makes it easier to plan when you're going to go because you can see the wait time and join the wait list accordingly. Just walk to the podium and let them know you're there once you arrive.
Very helpful on weekends
They help but if it is not crowded you can walk up.
