Camping above the lake is alot better more of the ooutdoor experience still alot of people but alot more spread out I'm a local and still enjoy the area. If you go the before memorial day alot less people the temperature is chilly but you can enjoy the peace and quiet
If you have a four-wheel drive you don't have to worry about paying for a camp spot you can drive up a little ways and right after the campground is free camping and it's that way for a couple miles then the ruffer roads start and it's like nobody. Little rocky move state but not too bad we can actually drive all the way up to Timberline right up the middle of some beautiful mountains
I think there are roughly 25 spots. They are first come first serve. When they say check in time is 2pm, or checkout is 12pm, it just like a hotel. Technically I think if you stay past 12pm or check in before 2, they can charge you an additional day. It's usually not a big deal during the week, but the weekends can get crazy. Quiet time is between 10pm and 6am. If you can get there, find a spot and set up quietly at 12am, you should be okay. There are also free campsites up the road. Just past the campground the road gets a little rough, but most of the sites are easily accessible, they just dont have the convenience of the potties and drinking water. It's a beautiful place! But sadly, like most of Colorado these days, very busy and not much of an escape anymore.
I am not certain about that. I don't know if you can reserve a spot in the campgrounds on the website. We showed up around 5 pm and the campground was full. There is dispersed camping to the left of the campground but it is first come first serve. The weekends fill up fast.
