My spouse worked here for almost three years right out of academy. After 2.5 years they were ready to move onto their next challenge and began applying to other departments, being completely transparent with their Chief. Chief was unsupportive and ungrateful for the work my spouse gave to the department. This is after they were on night shift for well over eight months in a row, but their contract said they would rotate shifts every four months. But because they were reliable and good at their job, they were forced to work alone at night for eight months. The isolation felt was really tough to watch as a loved one. They were promised trainings of their choice to be sent to but were never allowed to go after hire. Meaning no way to improve or find an area to specialize in. They were forced into roles, and when they voiced that they were uncomfortable with the role it was ignored. That was the only training they were allowed to attend. Now my biggest issue is what was said to a current officer after my spouse left. Chief told this current officer that my spouse told him they regretted leaving and were unhappy at their current department. He said this to prevent the officer from leaving. My spouse has never been happier, more supported and more appreciated than they are now. They have not even spoken to chief since they left a couple years ago. The leadership at the helm of this department is shocking. The lack of respect given to previous officers who risked their life for the city of Algona was felt by all family members. To put words in someone else’s mouth to keep officers from moving on is the most selfish form of leadership imaginable. It’s obvious Chief doesn’t have the ability to look in the mirror and find ways he can improve, maybe he is a big reason for officers leaving. I would recommend this department to no one. There is no spouse, parent, sibling or child that should risk their life for a department that will treat them so poorly. There is a department out there that will value you and care for you/your family. Keep searching!
