This was my third visit to Island Eye Surgery. Today was a follow up visit for a floater. Previously I had thought it be a well run practice with helpful and knowledgeable staff. Today was an emotionally very painful experience. My visit started with a 45 minute wait in the waiting area after arriving on time for my appointment. I was then led to the exam room where a technician rushed me through tonometry, slit lamp exam, and moved me to the ultrasound suite. After my ultrasound I was put back in the exam room. While initially in the exam room I observed that my chart was open on the computer screen and displayed my working diagnoses. I was shocked to see that the ophthalmologist, Dr. Najat, had diagnosed early signs of cataracts (Nuclear Sclerosis) in both eyes on my last visit and never discussed it with me. I then sat nervously in the exam room, worried what that meant for my vision, for over twenty minutes waiting for Dr. Najat. An unusually harried looking Dr. Najat entered the room. He looked in my right eye, saw the floater that I had ten years ago and told me it was still there. I advised that the new floater from my last visit two weeks ago was in the other eye. The first question I asked when I had the chance was about what I had seen in my chart. I wanted to know about the diagnosis of bilateral changes in both eyes consistent with early cataracts. I got a very matter of fact explanation of the changes and told that I probably wouldn't need surgery for about 6-7 years. There was no sense that he appreciated how devastating it was hear that after only just finding out by looking at my chart. He offered no explanation for why he didn't discuss it with me or why I had to find out by reading my chart. This was an experience I would wish on no one. I asked for copies of my records as I do not plan to return. Everyone is entitled to a bad day but there is really no excuse for not disclosing what is a potentially life altering diagnosis with a patient.

Everybody is kind and helpful, and they all work quickly. My early arrival allowed me to be seen in a few minutes. Both the technician as well as the doctor were attentive and comforting. The workplace has been recently cleaned and has been tastefully designed. Unfortunately, the TV wasn't very amusing; I wish they had shown anything different instead.

I recently had cataract surgery and all I can say is it’s the first time since I was 6 years old that I don’t need glasses to get out of bed in the morning, or for anything other than reading. Staff very friendly and helpful. Dr. Nejat is the best. I highly recommend him to anyone.
