I recently went to the local libraries in my area aiming to connect with those in need of counseling. I wanted to post a flyer in the community distribution spaces if it was available. Having gone to a few, there were spaces and my flyers were accepted by the branch managers and hung there. I was also informed of the available study rooms for use as well. I was sent to this branch in particular due to its location having study rooms. Upon arriving I asked if it was feasible to place/leave a flyer there for counseling services. I was asked if it was free and I said yes it is and it is stated on the flyer. The branch manager asked to see it and after reading it, she stated that she could not accept it and handed it back. I asked why and she stated, "you pray. We cannot solicit religious things.” A little confused by the statement I questioned again why when the other branch just accepted several of them and sent me to this location? After receiving a puzzled stare, she stated that she could look into it. Seeing the flyer for a recital and the live recital itself as I came into the library, I wanted to know how could other people from within the community use the library for their free function but a free counseling flyer could not be placed out. So I asked how could the performance take place and my flyer could not be accepted. I was told, "it's a recital." I stated that I didn't understand that and just wanted clarity. I was told, "separation of church and state." When I inquired about the study rooms I was given the steps on how to reserve them. I was also told that I could only use them for "studying" and not for anything pertaining to my religious purpose. Still pending a response from the county Director, I find this very selective. Based on this experience I believe that the branch managers choose at their discretion what they want at their locations. If this is or is not protocol, the branches need to be on the same page. Other Dallas branches advised me the study rooms can be used for counseling in the event I needed to meet in person vs online. I have even used the study rooms for the same in Collin county without any issues. I believe that if the libraries are to serve the community and the community can use the libraries to serve each other, we should all be given the fair opportunity to do so regardless of our faith. I truly hope this changes because it is not fair and it is a true hindrance to the needed help within our community. This library is nice and I would love to use it but the atmosphere is honestly questionable after this experience. Thanks for the effort given though. ***Update*** Having received a returned call, but no response after reaching back out via phone or email, I can only assume that after them being informed of the specifics this is not something of an issue to Dallas County. Apparently, discrimination against people of faith is just what it is for this library (and/or county). Continue to pray for our leaders and those within our communities.

This is a hidden gem of a library! Absolutely beautiful architecture, so clean, and the staff is so friendly! I can't believe this library is not packed every single time we go in it.
