Excellent care and service!

Knowledgeable and caring staff, Dr. Rowan knew exactly what our American bull dog mix needed and followed up by phoning us afterwards. Their attention to detail was greatly appreciated!

Dr. Dawn took the time to let Oscar warm up (even though he was very scared). She treated us both very warmly. She even clipped his nails and waived the nail trim charge. I’m very happy with how our appointment went. A kiss on his head and we were on our way. Thanks, all!

I am happy to visit my clients with disabilities at home or we arrange to pick up a pet who needs to be seen in the hospital. There is no additional fee. - JRVMD🐾
I don't brush my pets' teeth! Like you, I am busy and with 4 cats & 3 dogs, I am responsible for a total of 240 teeth. Since I don’t brush their teeth, I know dental cleanings under anesthesia are necessary. Most of us humans brush our teeth twice a day and we still get a professional cleaning every 6 - 12 months. Can you imagine how bad your mouth would feel if you NEVER brushed? So for all my pets, I don' t feel guilty. I do a yearly scaling & polishing under anesthesia. - JRVMD
I recommend exotic companion animal patients go to the Ryan Veterinary Hospital (Penn Vet in Philadelphia.) They see patients by appointment only, but the emergency service receives patients 24/7. They are staffed by the best experts in our area who provide wellness examinations on non-traditional pets as well as specialized diagnostic procedures (ultrasound, echocardiology, CT and MRI) & surgery. - JRVMD
Any major brand of pet food is fine. Dry versus wet depends on what the owner and the pet prefer. I feed my guys a mixture of dry and wet with a little warm water stirred in to make a gravy. Feeding meals is better, in general, then feeding free choice. You should feed puppy or kitten food for the 1 - 2 years, depending on breed, then switch to an adult food. I find the subscription service, Dog Food Advisor, a valuable tool to evaluate and compare brands.
To keep your pet in optimum health, two vet checkups per year is the currently recommended standard of care. We all know dogs and cats age faster, but they are also living longer than ever thanks to advances in veterinary medicine and nutrition. That’s the good side, the bad side is our pets are faced with the common conditions that come with older age. It’s best to treat disease early and even better to uncover it before it becomes obvious. Twice yearly vet checks give us a much better chance to diagnose problems before your pet suffers and allows us to offer the most cost-effective treatment.
Decreased activity - take notice if your pet is not playing as much as usual Not going up or down stairs - this could be an early sign of osteoarthritis Reluctance to jump up onto surfaces - this especially applies to cats Difficulty standing after lying down - is a sign of arthritis Decreased appetite - this can signal mouth pain Over grooming or licking a particular area - can be a sign of pain in a different area If you notice any of these signs, please book an appointment online now.
Sorry, we can't accommodate this request. 🙁
Dr. Rowan does a variety of orthopedic surgeries. Book a free second opinion appointment with our online appointment scheduler & Dr. R will do an exam and recommend treatment options. Some conditions may be treated with medication instead of surgery.

Yes, we do routine cleanings as well as treating oral disease. We do not clean teeth without anesthesia because doing that does not allow for the type of cleaning all dogs and cats need.
Yes. Please call to make sure your medication is in stocker order online: https://paolivetcare.vetsfirstchoice.com

It is safest to wait until the puppy has finished the series of vaccinations before letting it go to areas where other dogs frequent. That is usually at 4 months old. If you live in a rural area, there is no reason your puppy can’t play outside. The reason for caution is to prevent the transmission of parasites & infectious diseases.
Obesity rates, in general, are high for pets, but I don't think owners should be overly concerned about weight. You can monitor your pets’ Body Condition Score at home. Studies prove that a healthy weight leads to a longer life & who doesn’t want to spend more time with their pet? At the ideal weight, you should be able to feel your pet’s ribs, but also feel a thin fat covering over them. Behind the ribs there should be a waist. If you think your pet is overweight, I suggest decreasing the amount you feed by 5 to10 percent. If that doesn’t work, ask me about low-calorie diets. - JRVMD
Most dogs without a skin condition need a bath once a month. Bathing your dog more than once a week can cause dry skin. Be sure to check your pet’s ears weekly. Depending on the amount of dirt or wax you find, clean the ears to prevent infection. I recommend Project Paws Dogs Ear Wipes because they are convenient & each purchase funds 7 healthy meals for shelter dogs! Call now to schedule a bath & grooming for your best friend.

The best thing to do is brush 3 times a week, but since I am like most owners, I don’t ever brush my pets’ teeth. But I can’t allow oral bacteria to get a strong foothold on the teeth & gums, so instead I do regular cleanings under anesthesia & use dental chews approved by the Veterinary Oral Health Council. My dogs like Virbac C.E.T Chews & Milk-Bone Brushing Chews the best. Make sure you get the appropriate size. - JRVMD
