Questions & Answers

how does one send prescriptions electronically\

Electronic prescribing describes the transmission of a prescription to a pharmacy via a secure electronic portal. Electronic prescribing does NOT include faxing a prescription image to the pharmacy.

Question: prescriptions must now be sent electronically from prescribers to pharmacies -- but do prescriptions that are being transferred from pharmacy to pharmacy also need to be transferred electronically - through the pharmacy management system?

The law/rules haven't changed relating to prescription transfers.

When filling a prescription our computers put a one year expiration date on the label because once it leaves the original container we don' t have the actual date. Are we required to put the actual date on the label?

We assume that you are referring to the drug's expiration/beyond-use date (as opposed to the prescription's expiration date), the pharmacy is not required to include that information on the label. That said, if the pharmacy is going to put a drug expiration/beyond-used date on the label, a one-year maximum expiration dating is more appropriate than using the manufacturer's stock bottle date. USP standards recommend no more than one year, assuming the manufacturer expiration date isn't sooner. If the manufacturer's expiration date is less than one year, the pharmacy should use that date on the label and not the one year.

How would I begin organizing monthly Certified Pharmacy tech. meetings that would also provide C.E.. Thank you Cheryle Brade

The Board of Pharmacy does not require continuing education for pharmacy technicians. You would need to contact the national certification entities regarding continuing education for pharmacy technicians.
