ABSOLUTELY, STUNNINGLY IMPRESSED with Dr. Kwak and his staff. I had such an amazing experience with Dr. Kwak and every single staff member. The procedures I had was a septoplasty, Asian rhinoplasty, and chin implant. It went better than I could have ever expected. Dr. Kwak is truly a skilled artist. If you were to imagine what your best self would look like, Dr. Kwak will make it happen. His bedside manner, and professionalism is unlike any other. He was honest, and provided his expertise on what would be the best decision to make you look the best. From pre operation, to surgery day, to post operation, everything was done professionally, and effortlessly. I didn’t even have any bruising from my procedures! I want to give a special thank you to Violet who went above and beyond with taking care of me. She was instantly available for whatever inquiry I had throughout the whole process. She had gentle hands, and was as equally as professional as Dr. Kwak. The whole entire staff treats you as a VIP, and their patient etiquette is the Gold standard. I highly recommend Dr. Kwak. DOES EYELID SURGERY LEAVE SCARS?

Edward S. Kwak MD - ESKMD Facial Plastic Surgery | Oct 21, 2021
Edward S. Kwak MD - ESKMD Facial Plastic Surgery | Oct 21, 2021

During upper lid surgery, a minute, inconspicuous incision is made in the eyelid crease through which excess fat and skin folds may be eliminated. Eyelid muscles may also be tightened, combatting droopiness. This is also the method that is used on Dr. Kwak's patients when performing eyelid surgery to address vision loss related to sagging lids that droop over the lashes. In addition to vision correction, upper eyelid surgery patients can enjoy a more alert, rejuvenated appearance that does wonders for self-confidence

Hi i have a long face with really small eyes that practically disappear when taking pictures. I was wondering if eyelid surgery would make my eyes bigger? Also how do i go about finding the right doctor??

Edward S. Kwak MD - ESKMD Facial Plastic Surgery | Oct 21, 2020

Ptosis vs Pseudoptosis. You concerns are common for patients seeking eyelid surgery. Surgery can address two major anatomic structures which can contribute to an appearance of a "small eye". Pseudoptosis, is typically due to redundant upper eyelid skin and in some individuals the redundancy can so much that is interferes with their vision. Treatment for this can include a traditional upper eyelid blepharoplasty, in which this redundant skin is appropriately removed. Ptosis, occurs when muscles responsible for opening the eyelid do not work properly. As a result, the upper eyelid may not open high enough, and could interfere with an individual's vision. This can be caused from multiple medical issues. Surgery can be performed to address this problem. Either case, it is best for you to see an ophthalmologist or plastic surgery to determine what is best for you

Are there any risks to having a facelift done?

Edward S. Kwak MD - ESKMD Facial Plastic Surgery | Oct 22, 2019
Edward S. Kwak MD - ESKMD Facial Plastic Surgery | Oct 22, 2019

Facelifts are extremely safe, if performed by a qualified physician. But, as with all surgical procedures, there are certain risks involved. Minor post-surgical bruising, scarring and bleeding are common. These will reduce a few days after the procedure. Pain, swelling and tenderness may be present for a few months. Infections and blood clots are very rare, but care must be taken to avoid exposure to anything that can damage, injure or infect the skin.

Most patients are pleased that recovery turns out to be less painful than they expected, but may feel pressure, headache, and tenderness. The most unpleasant after effect is that the nose swelling restricts breathing and the nose feels “stuffy.”

ASIAN PTOSIS SURGERY Do your drooping upper eyelids cause you to appear sleepy, disengaged or sluggish? Eyelid ptosis has a few different causes, such as aging or genetics, and each unique scenario is treated accordingly. Sometimes ptosis surgery is performed in conjunction with our New York Asian eyelid surgery. During the procedure, the client receives local anesthesia. The doctor will create an incision in the eyelid crease which allows him to make adjustments. Afterwards, ultra fine sutures are used to seal the incisions. These are removed after one week, which is around the time that patients are able to return to work.

How long does a facelift surgery take?

Edward S. Kwak MD - ESKMD Facial Plastic Surgery | Oct 22, 2019
Edward S. Kwak MD - ESKMD Facial Plastic Surgery | Oct 22, 2019

The standard full New York facelift takes about 3-4 hours to be completed. But, this may increase up to 6 hours, if you have planned to have other dermatological or facial reconstruction surgeries along with this. The mini-facelift procedure, due to the focused nature of the surgery, takes only about 2-3 hours to be completed. This is a minimally invasive procedure where only certain specific areas of the face will be treated.

Is facelift better than non-surgical tightening devices?

Edward S. Kwak MD - ESKMD Facial Plastic Surgery | Oct 22, 2019
Edward S. Kwak MD - ESKMD Facial Plastic Surgery | Oct 22, 2019

With advancements in injectable fillers and other non-surgical treatments for facial rejuvenation, some may believe facelift surgery is becoming obsolete. However, even with the rise of these treatments, facelifts continue to be as popular as ever as no other treatment produces such a dramatic improvement for those who are living with sagging, drooping facial skin and tissue. Patients who opt for non-surgical methods achieve a degree of improvement from mild to moderate signs of aging. Most dermal fillers have a limited lifespan, producing a smoother look for just a few months to a year before breaking down and then reabsorbed by the body. The refreshed, restored facial appearance produced by a facelift will last for many years with proper care. The outcome of a facelift can simply not be reproduced with non-surgical treatments alone. If you want to make a significant difference and achieve real facial rejuvenation that takes years off your appear, facelift can be right for you.

How is the recovery for chin implant surgery?

Edward S. Kwak MD - ESKMD Facial Plastic Surgery | Oct 22, 2019
Edward S. Kwak MD - ESKMD Facial Plastic Surgery | Oct 22, 2019

ESK chin and cheek augmentation clients will find that bruising, swelling and discomfort are surprisingly manageable, and can be easily remedied with oral antibiotics and pain medications prescribed by Dr. Kwak and his team. Chin surgery clients may require a soft foods or liquid diet for several days as they heal, as chewing can irritate the newly adjusted tissue and muscle. Vigorous activity or exercise is discouraged for the first few weeks, but these can soon be resumed along with a normal work schedule within about 10-14 days. Remember that although your fabulous results may be visible right away, they can continue to improve for up to six weeks as your swelling gradually reduces.

How is chin augmentation performed?

Edward S. Kwak MD - ESKMD Facial Plastic Surgery | Oct 22, 2019
Edward S. Kwak MD - ESKMD Facial Plastic Surgery | Oct 22, 2019

Chin and cheek augmentation patients can expect to receive their surgery under general anesthesia or IV sedation, performed by a board-certified anesthesiologist. Surgery typically lasts 1-3 hours, depending on the complexity of the procedure. In both cases, incisions are made within the mouth so as to cause no visible scarring. The chin implant is inserted above the jawbone and then adjusted into position, while the cheek implants are slipped through an incision at the upper gums and then fine-tuned into place. If chin or cheek reduction is required, the doctor will make the same incisions and simply resize and resculpt the bones to refine the profile.

Unfortunately, yes, this is true. Most doctors will tell you not to eat or drink after 12 the night before your surgery. Especially essential is that you do not eat or drink anything for six hours prior to your surgery (no gum, no sucking candy, nothing). Special circumstances may allow for you to have clear liquids two hours before surgery, but the best rule of thumb is to assume that you won’t be eating or drinking the day of your surgery.

It is usually recommended that you attempt to quit smoking (the sooner the better) before your surgery because of the increased risk of facing problems both during and after your surgery due to smoking. Doctors will advise that you do not smoke for at least 24 hours before your surgery and to lay off cigarettes for as long as you can after.

So what is eyelid surgery anyway, and why are so many more people getting it?

Edward S. Kwak MD - ESKMD Facial Plastic Surgery | Oct 22, 2019
Edward S. Kwak MD - ESKMD Facial Plastic Surgery | Oct 22, 2019

Eyelid surgery can fix a number of aesthetic complaints including reducing bags, excess skin around the eyes, and wrinkles. Some patients also undergo eyelid surgery to improve impaired vision due to sagging lids. During eyelid surgery, tiny incisions are made in the upper and lower lids to remove excess fat and skin folds. These incisions, if done right by an expert surgeon, are invisible or well-hidden in natural creases. According to renowned New York facial plastic surgeon who specializes in eyelid surgery, Dr. Edward S. Kwak, eyelid surgery has the power to produce a livelier, younger and rejuvenated face. Dr. Kwak speculates that the increase in popularity of the procedure is due to the broadened awareness that eyes can make or break desired appearance. “Many people come into my practice for eyelid surgery because they have tired looking eyes or a stern appearance,” he says, “which can both drastically changing their daily look.”

WHAT IS RHINOPLASTY?

ESK MD | Oct 22, 2019
Edward S. Kwak MD - ESKMD Facial Plastic Surgery | Oct 21, 2020

Nose reshaping surgery, or a “nose job” is medically-termed “rhinoplasty.” This procedure addresses a range of nasal issues, from cosmetic to functional. It is a customized surgery, as each patient has unique problems to resolve, including aesthetic issues such as an overly large nose, drooping nose, bulbous nose tip, wide or long nostrils, or a flat nose bridge, among others.

How does Rhinoplasty works?

ESK MD | Oct 22, 2019
Edward S. Kwak MD - ESKMD Facial Plastic Surgery | Oct 21, 2020

There are two types of rhinoplasty: open and closed. Open rhinoplasty is performed using a small, discreet incision on the underside of your nose in between your nostrils. Incisions are completely concealed within the nose during a closed technique. Dr. Kwak will then reshape the cartilage and bone in the nose to make the necessary changes to the bridge, tip, and nostrils. Cartilage grafts can be used to add volume where necessary. The septum is also straightened and obstructions are removed. After all changes have been made, the skin is gently re-draped and the incision is closed.

What is the healing time for Asian Double Eyelid surgery?

Edward S. Kwak MD - ESKMD Facial Plastic Surgery | Oct 22, 2019
Edward S. Kwak MD - ESKMD Facial Plastic Surgery | Oct 22, 2019

Almost every perspective patient inquiring about Asian eyelid surgery, or double eyelid surgery, has concerns regarding healing time. Appropriately so, since many of my patients have highly demanding professions in the New York City metropolitan area. For the incisional double eyelid technique, the typical postoperative healing time is as follows: The first day after surgery, we have all patients return to our office to monitor their healing. At this time you can expect to have some swelling and potentially some bruising to the upper eyelid. Your eyelid crease height will be also exaggeratedly high, because of this swelling. On day 3-5, you will make a second post-operative visit to our office. On this visit, some or all of the skin sutures will be removed. On day 7, you will make a third post-operative visit to have any remaining skin sutures removed. At this time, most of the bruising has resolved and swelling to the eyelid has come down so that most patients feel very comfortable

Dr. Kwak, In your experience, what’s the most effective surgical technique for an Asian Double Eyelid Surgery?

Edward S. Kwak MD - ESKMD Facial Plastic Surgery | Oct 22, 2019
Edward S. Kwak MD - ESKMD Facial Plastic Surgery | Oct 22, 2019

Asian double eyelid surgery is one of the most common cosmetic procedures performed on patients of East Asian decent. This procedure is done to create an upper eyelid crease. Approximately 50% of East Asians are born without a supratarsal fold (aka double eyelid crease). This procedure can be performed using several techniques. But the major difference in techniques is whether the surgeon approaches this surgery using an incision or a suture technique (non-incision) to create a double eyelid fold.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT RHINOPLASTY SURGEON?

Edward S. Kwak MD - ESKMD Facial Plastic Surgery | Oct 22, 2019
Edward S. Kwak MD - ESKMD Facial Plastic Surgery | Oct 21, 2021

There are few facial surgeries that require more delicacy and technique than rhinoplasty, so choosing the right surgeon is of critical importance. Do your homework, visit with several, and carefully review before and after images of real patients, and read patient reviews. EDUCATION A rhinoplasty should only be performed by a specialist who holds credentials from the American Board of Plastic Surgeons. Surgeons with a specialty in otolaryngology (head and neck specialist) offer a superior level of training and have dedicated several extra years to education and experience. EXPERIENCE As with any profession, experience matters. You don’t want to be a guinea pig and undergo rhinoplasty with surgeon who has just attained credentials. Choose a surgeon with many years of experience in performing rhinoplasty on all types of patients to avoid the risk of problems or complications associated with surgical errors.
