Dear Rose Mary, your friends may want to contact the Illinois Department of Human Services. They may be eligible for snap benefits ( food stamps, Medicaid, etc...). Their eligibility is determined by calculating how much money they have left each month after subtracting their monthly expenses ( mortgage, rent, utilities ) from their monthly income. That $ balance will determine if they are eligible for snap benefits. If your friends have already applied for SNAP benefits and were denied or the benefits they receive aren't sufficient, then there are numerous food pantries in Berwyn and the surrounding suburbs that are available. When you go to st. Leonard's Food Pantry, talk to the people in line and the volunteers and they will help you with locations all of the other food pantries and the days and times they are open.
