Dr. Dervin is great - he has great bedside manner, explains everything well, and is responsive to the patients needs. Sadie is a great dental hygienist as well - I always look forward to seeing her!

After an accident at home I called a dentist's office near to me and was told that I could get in 2 weeks later. A family member recommended that I call Dr. Dervin's office so I did. Julie got on the phone with me and asked me if I was in pain, (the first place didn't). Then she scheduled me for the following day. Dr. Dervin is friendly, professional and painless! Couldn't ask for better.

Questions & Answers

Can I get implants if I have dentures?

Richard M. Dervin, DDS | Jan 20, 2022

In many cases, yes! Implants are often used to secure a denture, which helps you speak more clearly, eat without discomfort, and avoid embarrassing slips. Contact us to confirm if you're a candidate for an implant-retained denture in our Shawnee, KS office: https://www.dervindental.com/contact/.

What are the consequences of missing teeth?

Richard M. Dervin, DDS | Jan 20, 2022

Missing one tooth, let alone more, can cause a host of problems. This includes difficulty chewing, speech impairment, bite changes, jaw pain, adjacent teeth shifting to the gap followed by other teeth moving out of place, premature aging, sunken facial appearance, lowered confidence, and more. Luckily, there are multiple options for replacing missing teeth. Contact us for a consultation: https://www.dervindental.com/contact/.

What should I expect after root canal treatment or surgery?

You should be able to return to work, school, or your daily life after the procedure. However, you'll want to avoid eating until the numbness wears off. You may also experience slight tenderness and sensitivity surrounding that tooth, especially if there was an infection, for a few days. Eating soft foods while avoiding that tooth and taking over-the-counter pain medication will help ease discomfort. In many cases, you'll need to revisit us to have a crown placed to fully restore the tooth's appearance, strength, and function.

Do I need a root canal?

Richard M. Dervin, DDS | Jan 20, 2022
Richard M. Dervin, DDS | Jan 20, 2022

A root canal is necessary when the inside of your tooth becomes infected or damaged. If left untreated, the infection will spread, increasing your risk for additional dental problems, painful symptoms, and overall health issues. Signs you need a root canal include severe tooth pain or sensitivity, discoloration, swelling or tenderness of the nearby gums, and bumps on your gums. You may also experience no symptoms at all. To see if you need a root canal, contact us for an appointment.

What is the best way to whiten my teeth?

Richard M. Dervin, DDS | Jan 20, 2022
Richard M. Dervin, DDS | Jan 20, 2022

The short answer: Professional tooth whitening by a dentist. Why? It'll work better than store-bought or DIY methods. Professional teeth whitening removes intrinsic (internal) and extrinsic (surface) stains, which means whiter, even, and longer-lasting results. It's also customized to you, including your sensitivity and desired shade of white. When should I consider dental implants?

Richard M. Dervin, DDS | Jan 20, 2022
Richard M. Dervin, DDS | Jan 20, 2022

A dental implant is an excellent choice for replacing a missing, broken, or severely decayed tooth. It's the only restoration that'll replace an entire tooth from root to crown. This helps to make the implant look, feel, and function like a real tooth. No one will notice!
