The Samaritan texts in the New Testament are some of the most important. The pastoral lessons concerning Jesus's treatment of Samaritans in breaking with the prejudices held by his contemporaries is paramount. This Sunday's lectionary readings focused on one of these texts where Jesus heals ten lepers and the Samaritan is the only one who comes back to thank him. Any good homily based on this text can emphasize humility and gratitude. On the surface, Fr. Rene's homily on this text focused on those very aspects. However, this homily was politically coded, theologically vacuous trash. Somehow the homily devolved into a poorly conceived lesson on the nature of rights. These rights, for Fr. Rene, are not entitlements. He admits that this idea contravenes Vatican teachings on social justice. These ideas, built over decades, are apparently not grounded in the idea that human beings have inherent worth and dignity and merit certain protections and guarantees, an idea that Fr. Rene openly scoffs at. Fr. Rene instead reassured his flock that they are inherently worthless and radically undeserving of anything, to include - and I'm not exaggerating - love and protection from one's parents. Using the word "entitlement" in 2022 is immediately suspect. It is politically coded and loaded with connotations that cannot be overlooked. To have self-esteem, and a sense of inherent worth, not only drives one to believe that they are deserving of fair treatment and certain rights but to believe that others do as well. This was a crowded Mass. Normally I would call this a blessing. However, I would have been embarrassed to have brought a non-Catholic to this Mass or to have anyone's impressions of the Church writ large to have been based on such a loud and obnoxious man; the "Ragin' Cajun" so clearly trying to ape the energy and tone of a charismatic preacher. And therein lies part of the problem. Fr. Rene's charisma and youth lead to the positive reinforcement from parishioners nodding approvingly that this man "just tells it like it is." Further, people who might walk out (like me) must simply have heard something that struck a nerve. These are regrettably positive reinforcements and validation of one's sense of righteousness. It forecloses any hope of introspection and consideration of the consequences of one's words. The transcendental sense of the Mass is ruined as the Church devolves into a mirror of a bafflingly cruel and ignorant fallen world. St. Gregory has a wonderful reputation and provides outreach that clearly does not conform to the message I heard today. I hope that reputation will survive Fr. Rene's tenure.
