Since my neck surgery 2 years ago to repair a whiplash injury from a car accident, doctor visits have been a nerve-racking experience. My neurosurgeon and his residents’ attitudes were a curt consult-cut-next experience, barely making eye contact, let alone conversation. I told his admin about my unhappiness with the non-surgical care, but never received a response. The experience is typical. Lack of empathy from doctors is the norm, not the exception. However, Dr. Joshua Martin has real bedside manner. He builds a relationship with his patients while in the exam room. They are people, not problems or experiments. He is personable, caring, a great listener, empathetic, and compassionate to patients’ concerns and feelings, both physical and emotional. The way he communicates is more important than the information he shares. He validates my pain, listens to my problems, remembers prior discussions, and actively follows up to ensure I get what I need, from therapy to paperwork. A young physician, Dr. Joshua Martin’s training is fresh. He has a new doctor’s enthusiasm for patient care. Yet he comes across as an experienced veteran. His Harvard Magna cum laude highest honors degree in neurobiology, and Tufts MD are impressive credentials. But he is humble, his manner reassuring, not condescending, unlike many high-achieving doctors. Whether dispensing treatment or advice, he inspires confidence. More than book-smart, he combines clinical evidence with intuition of patients’ pain, taking their input seriously and working with them to on the best treatment plan to help them recover. Dr. Marin’s passion for healing, not just treating, sets him apart from others. His curiosity drives him to seek a cure, not just treat symptoms with pills or injections. He emphasizes healthy habits of exercise and posture, which gives me hope for relief from my neck, lower back, and nerve pain. No other doctors gave me hope through personal responsibility. He starts his answers to my unlimited questions with an enthusiastic, “that’s a great question,” followed by images or a spine model to explain everything in detail in simple language, not medical jargon. His help understanding the causes and treatments of my pain allows me to make educated decisions about my physical therapy, daily exercises, medications, and other therapies. From Dr. Martin’s excellent treatment, passion, investigative mind, and ability to connect, I have developed great trust and respect for him. The ROSM practice is also excellent, quick to make appointments, good availability, and strong follow-up. If you have chronic pain, you won't go wrong with ROSM and Dr. Martin.
