Disappointed that they required so much financial requirements. Sure missed out on having my mom!!

Probably the best experience ever for a service that we ended up never using! Dad’s dementia required that he move to a memory care facility and Somerford came highly recommended from a couple of sources. Our conversations with the staff reinforced those recommendations. We were all set to move in right after the holidays, then his condition took a turn for the worse, had to be hospitalized and he ended up passing away at the end of January. (Not Covid-related for the record). Terri and Pauline were amazingly helpful, professional and most importantly caring throughout the entire process.

I am updating a previous review. My mother was transferred to Somerford from a previous facility. She had a terminal condition. From the moment she arrived, she was treated with dignity and respect by the staff. Her time there (7 months) was truly amazing despite limitations due to the pandemic. She made friends and loved every day there. At the end, the staff took great care of her and she died with dignity. I am eternally grateful to the staff there. Of note, I am a physician in the area so i deal with these facilities all the time. Somerford is among the best in many aspects.

Somerford is an amazing assisted living facility with outstanding staff. Mom moved into her lovely apartment earlier this year and has been accepted and loved on and made to feel so welcomed by everyone there. Staff is always available for assistance, to answer questions and concerns and lend a hand wherever possible. Mom has become more active and outgoing than sbe has the past few years, attending events and participating in activities and has made good friends. Its been a challenge for everyone during COVID quarantine, but Somerford staff has made it work! We are so pleased and blessed to have Mom residing here at Somerford.

Good question! Embarking on a new chapter in life doesn’t mean old friends have to be left behind. Assisted living communities offer a wide range of programs and events residents can invite guests to participate in. And they also offer transportation services so your dad can attend events in and around town with his old buddies. Fortunately, there are other ways your father can stay in touch. Social media channels like Facebook or a video chat service such as Skype are two easy avenues for staying connected.
This sometimes happen when it actually comes time to make the move. Your mom is probably anxious and a little uncertain. A late life transition like this isn’t easy to make. What might help is to get her involved in some of the events and activities at the new community now, instead of waiting until she actually moves in. Talk with the staff to see about helping her find a buddy with similar interests and hobbies that she can bond with during her visits. Becoming more familiar with the community and with a few fellow residents can help make the move feel a little less intimidating.
We hear this concern from seniors often. Sorting through and packing up a lifetime of memories and belongings can be overwhelming. One resource we like to share with families is a group of professionals called Senior Move Managers. They are experts at handling all of the details of a later life move. You can find one near your home by visiting the National Association of Senior Move Managers or Certified Relocation & Transition Specialist.
