“We Truly Care“ is a header to one of the companies paragraphs describing their truly caring customer service. So let’s dig into that with some personal experience happening just today. But before I do, I must address retail as a basic function. They have products and services. If they have service but no product, their business cannot be sustained. Alternatively, if they have product but no (or very poor) service, the same effect as before. Although realistically it may sustain a bit longer but not indefinitely. My experience occurred late afternoon on a Monday. There were no managers around that I could see but what happened was this. I’ll give a brief dialogue exchange between me and the clerk as it occurred. The person’s real name will be used. As I walked into the store: Megan: Hi, can I help you find anything? Me: (Holding out a small washer) Megan: aisle 7 Me: Do you know… Megan: (Leaning out a bit from her station) aisle 7! Me: Do y… Megan: (Leaning out further and raising her volume as if she were speaking to a hearing impaired person) AISLE 7!!! At that point I walked back to aisle 7 got the washers I needed and after paying the OTHER cashier, walked out. Now a couple things could have diffused the situation. 1. If Megan let me finish she would have heard me ask for the location of a different product. 2. If she let me finish she would have heard me ask if, to the best of her knowledge, were any that looked like what I showed her to which her response may have been - there are so many back there I have no idea or let me send someone back there to assist you. THAT would have been proper customer service. Instead I left with 16 washers, and got the rest of my hardware from VETS hardware in Dewitt. And most likely will - from now on. If I can suggest one thing more - other than what was already described is; St. Johns is working hard to revitalize their downtown. If every store had a presumptuous little clerk like Megan, who clearly prided herself on knowing what the customer wanted more so than the customer, it will be a tough uphill battle to fight. Additionally, perhaps Megan can stock shelves, unload trucks, or paint the floor. Something not requiring customer interaction. Because she doesn’t get it. But from now on, I’ll likely be driving to VETS. Particularly if Megan is working.
