Whistler Gulch Campground

Great location / in the middle of deadwood and mount Rushmore. This campsite is best for that. And pull through sites fire pit is basically at your front door. No level ground in between spots. I selected the spot based on sleeping here and going off to do other activities, not lounging around the campfire and then chairs. That is not conducive because you are 12 feet away from the next camper doing the same thing.

Nice place. Well cared for. More room than other camp grounds in the area. Trolly comes buy to take you into town. We will stay here again for sure.

All I can say is DO NOT STAY HERE!! DO NOT TRY TO BRING A LARGE CLASS A up this hill to the narrow unlevel gravel sites. The access road has a drop off onto the sites, easy to drag coach and hitch. The configuration of the access road to accommodate rain run off drainage has gullies and dips that can also drag and damage your big rig. High clearance rigs would be ok. We have a 45 foot Class A and spent over an hour trying to fit in 3 different sites. We finally gave up. The staff member was not able to offer a refund for our 2 night stay. We came back the next day to try to meet with the owner. She was not in, so the staff member at the desk called the owner and we were able to TRY and speak to her over speaker phone. She became very loud and started ranting that we could have fit and , " I have had bigger rigs than yours stay in my park". There was no reasoning with her. Finally she sad, " I will refund $54.00 and you can just get on your way". (which is not a full refund) The park is in poor condition and Good Sam rates it a 9.5, 9.5, 9. I will be contacting Good Sam also. In my opinion, this type of treatment is not good customer service and it is not acceptable to be bullied in this way. I wonder what the customer in the office was thinking as he heard this conversation. In our 12 years of RVing in a class A, we have never encountered a situation like this. The staff, Dan and Cassy, were very nice and tried to help, thank you. I would recommend staying at the Elkhorn Ridge RV Park north of Deadwood on Hwy 85. It is an upscale resort with beautiful amenities. The price is just about equal to Whistlers Gulch!! We would stay a the Elkhorn Ridge again.

First i want to say the location is stunning! The campground is seated between 2 hills and it is breathtaking. Unfortunately the campsites are EXTREMELY small. By far the smallest of anywhere we have stayed at before in several states. As you can see in the picture taken from our kitchen window you are right up against your neighbor and the neighbor behind you is real close to you. Certainly can't put your awning out. Yard games are a no go. Fires are scary as well because the fire pits are way to close for comfort to the next camper. There is no privacy. I cant for the life of me understand why they wouldn't have tried to make the spaces a little bigger. Beautiful location but we will never stay here again. South Dakota is our favorite place to camp and we have stayed at several campsites and this is by far the lowest on our list. I would have given it 1 stars but the view is phenomenal and it's situated in my favorite place of all time so it gets credit. But smelling the neighbors sewer because it is so close is a true deal breaker.
