Highlight of the trip. I learned what a thresher was. If you go on drives in Montana, you're bound to see one in a field looking like an artifact but just as amazing to see!

Is the Bison display really a creation on William Temple Hornaday...?

Yes, this display is of the actual bison that were "harvested" near Fort Benton, MT in 1886 by Hornaday and his team. The display was originally done for, and displayed in the Smithsonian until 1957. So yes, these bison are quite old and famous!
