The eastern terminus is a scenic ride, very Americana with sprawling farmland and gentle hills near the Missouri and Mississippi rivers. You won't have huge elevation changes on this leg of the trail. It's got a good deal of tree cover, but the wind may catch you in some of the more open areas. A strong headwind can make for a challenging ride here. If you set in at old town St. Charles then ride to Machens and back, you'll clock in at about 22 miles.

Nicely done and informative. Trail surface was nice but soft in areas. Beautiful ride and great views

The Katy Trail's Eastern Terminus as the name implies, is the very Eastern and of the Katy Trail. This section of trill is located at mile marker 27 at the Machens trailhead. From here, the Katy Trail heads westbound with Black Walnut at mile marker 30 and St Charles at mile marker 39. The Machens trailhead has a pavilion with bench seats and an information board with area history and the Katy Trail map. There is also a restroom that is cleaned regularly. If you plan on visiting the Machens Trailhead, you will need to do so by bicycle or on foot. There is no parking at this location, however the Black Walnut trail head offers vehicle parking and is only 3 miles west of the Machens trailhead. Trail Maintenance Most of this section of Katy Trail between Machens and St Charles was resurfaced.in October 2018. So, the ride texture is softer than regular Katy riders are accustomed to. There was also a fair amount of tree trimming, but there is still a great amount of tree cover.

Machens is currently the east terminus of the Katy trail. I believe that the reason Machens is mile 27 is that there is intent to expand the trail further east, thereby making the "new" eastern-most terminus mile number 1. Edit: the new terminus would be at the Missouri/Mississippi river confluence.
