The State of Nebraska mandates that the Assessors Office in each county value property within 90% of market value. Most of our is done via the information they possess in their files, then they compare to the top sales in the last couple of years to determine value. You then have the right to protest either the info they have on your property or the sales comps they used to determine the value. If you disagree them you can protest either one. Protests are usually done in March / April time frame, check with your Assessor. Them the mil levy is set by each governmental entity that needs money to operate ie: schools, fire & rescue, ect.. It is vitally important to do two things here: vote people in that will be fiscally responsible and attend meetings where the budget is talked about and mil levy set. The School District typically takes 60% to 65% of the overall taxes. So, get involved if you are looking for any changes otherwise, you get what you get.
