Use to cross this bridge in my youth from Charlotte, 1950's, 60's/70's/80's/90's ect. on our way to Windy Hill Beach section in North Myrtle. Very exciting to see it open back then. Two gates would come down on both sides, sirens blaring, red lights flashing. My Dad took my brother and me up the stairs to the where the bridge office is. The man was very nice & showed us how the bridge operated. The bridge has got to open during a power outage ... Electrcity first, gas motor second and hand crank third. Still can't believe he didn't run us off. People ask why they don't take it out with the hiway 17 bridge next door? I would guess their is too much business in the area. Without that bridge, they would go out of business and what a log jam for the local folks. Love these old type bridges ...

Wonderful memories of crossing the swing bridge.. Let the fun begin as you enter Cherry Grove Beach

Neat old swing bridge named after a guy with a funny nickname. And apparently some commenters didn't notice that it crosses an active shipping channel, and also don't know that marine traffic has the right of way. The bridge opens on demand. If you're in that much of a hurry, use the Route 17 bridge right next to this one.
