Good historical tour. Original buildings still intact. Loved the huge old oak trees. Bring mosquito repellent during the warm months.

This Plantation of the era of Mount Vernon it seemed appropriate our home tour guide volunteer docent, Linda, should be a Virginian. We are ever fascinated with the complicated frontier history of this great country. On this midday Thursday Linda ably set the stage to get a glimpse Georgia coastal life in an earlier time. A few hours here is well spent. A walk amongst the many magnificent live oaks that date the time the Spanish first set foot on these shores can be a spiritual event.

Wanna experience ghosts? Head out to the St James Hotel, in Cimmaron NM. Current Dining Room, used to be the saloon. 400 gunshots in the ceiling. 14 or 17 men killed inside. Black Jack Ketchum was hung down the road. They miss judged his weight and popped his head off.

The small quaint community north of the plantation called Darien is about 3 or 4 miles up the road. You will find hotels and motels there. But if you want to save money try Airbandb. There may be some there.

What was the very large cast iron shallow bowl outside used for?

These "very large cast iron shallow bowls" were used for making Syrup from the juice squeezed from stalks of sugar cane... These syrup pots were most often supported about 30" off the ground by a brick foundation... A wood fed fire underneath these pots supplied the heat necessary to boil off excess moisture from the sugar-cane juice resulting in cane syrup...

In not sure but that's a great question. Perhaps call them directly. They do offer senior discounts. Also, wear comfortable shoes!
