Driving through the Midwest there are few beacons of convenience and civilization that outshine this humble establishment. We came for gas but left with something much more valuable, life experience. From the outside Rick's may appear to your average traveler as nothing more than a simple highway-side pit stop. Looks however, can be deceiving. The restrooms were shiny and clean. There was not the expected lingering odor of human defecation and shame that one normally detects when relieving themselves hastily in a random gas station commode. You will find no poo speckled bowls or slimy soap caked dispensers here. No, the smell was at worst neutral and dare I say at best fresh and refreshing. I would of liked to have stayed longer to explore the countless surprises Rick's has in store for all of us. When we exited the building we noticed a strange man washing and squeegeeing our car windshield, unprompted, uninvited, but certainly not unwanted or unwelcomed. With a wide grin and a wink he spoke warmly and kindly, "How're y'all doin?" before returning to the establishment. We may have left Rick's far behind us on the roadside but make no mistake the memory of this special place will reside in our minds and hearts until our dying days.
