The Beaver Lake Bird Sanctuary is a wonderful wildlife oasis in the very busy north Asheville area. It is a great spot for a evening walk or morning birding expedition. Walk a 3/8-mile boardwalk through a wetland area and by the lake, complete with sitting areas along the way to soak up the views and watch birds. Beaver Lake provides resting, feeding and nesting spots for resident and migratory birds. The Elisha Mitchell Audubon Society, a chapter of National Audubon, manages the 10-acre sanctuary. It was established in the mid-1980s, when Audubon successfully led an effort to prevent construction of a strip mall on the site. It's free to visit. For a guided bird walk, stop by at 9 AM on the first Saturday of each month from October through March. From April through September, the walks are 8 AM on the first Saturday of each month. North of the sanctuary, a gravel path follows the lake's edge to the dam and spillway for an extended walk. No pets are allowed in the sanctuary.

Questions & Answers

Why would birds (bluebirds and crows) be attracted to a trash fire?

Benjamin Fordham Jr. | Oct 8, 2019
Daniel Garbinski | Oct 7, 2020

The Crow's were probably mad that their food source was being destroyed (you know how much Crow's love trash). The Bluebirds may have been eating the insects attracted to the light from the fire, especially if it was near sunset.

Why is the water low in the lake on the sanctuary side? I always cut up melon and fruit and leafy green for the turtles and they were gone last week. I saw so disappointed because they will be hibernating soon.

There having significant problems with a business up the road. A pipe underneath the parking lot burst and caused a sinkhole. After a series of significant rain falls, debris gravel and other items flowed into the bird sanctuary and the area has been closed until cleaned. The plan is that the owners of the building will complete the parking lot repairs and then will clean the bird sanctuary
