But they probably played venues that paid dues to ascap/bmi that enabled them to do that. Or played in a time before PROs came around trying to collect from bars in brooklyn

Yes, the crowd is diverse. It's an ideal singer/ songwriter venue. I have no knowledge of associated costs. You would have to consult the person handling the bookings. In my experience, it has been a "pass the hat" environment.
